Dave Gahan Depeche Mode
Bristol, England,

This is a very early shot of Dave. It was shot for Record Mirror around 1980. It was probably one of the first times they were seen by the press. He is very young and he has not quite got the Rock Star look yet. For me it was always more interesting working and meeting these bands before they got the fame. I have quite a few shots of the rest of the band and some other locations. When they are not famous they give you masses of time and as the fame builds - photographers access gets limited.

Utterly Ridiculous

How pathetic does this sound...

I usually get the vegetarian entree for lunch from the Rush cafeteria. You will not believe what today's veggie option was. Whipped Sweet Potatos. I'm thinking it might be something different..turns out its a freaking plate of potatos and they charged me 3.50 for a damn side......!!!!!!

Daily Dancer

OH MY GOD.

http://www.dailydancer.com

This guy uploads a dance three times a week (he used to be daily, but he is now preserving his energy). So hilarious. Be sure to check out "I will Survive" with a cameo from his girlfriend's mom. For the girls, he sometimes dances TOPLESS. I can't even begin to pick a favorite dance - they are all priceless. Eva agrees!

And this is his first ever dance...

The funniest diet book i've seen!

This is the funniest book I've ever seen, Skinny Bitch. It's straight talk on being on a diet! If you guys see it, read excerpts from it, it's hilarious...

Manish

Alice and Friends' Himalayan Spirit Bento Box

This is for you, Neha! :)

Alice and Friends is an unpretentious restaurant in Chicago that serves delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes. The speciality seems to be mock meats - we tried a wide range of soy meat substitutes and it was all delicious, from mock beef, mock duck, mock pork, and mock korean bbq. I tried the Himalayan spirit" (root vegetables, lotus root, chestnuts and barbecue un-beef) and the barbeqcue un-beef was simply fantastic with an amazing and satisfying texture and taste.

For Michelle!

Hey, Michelle. Here is some fried food for you, straight from Iowa's famous "Pink Poodle" prime rib joint. Fried ravioli, fried mushrooms (a veggie?), and fried shrimp. This was followed by enormously large pieces of meat that would send Manish and Neha into shock.

Love Those Fried Oysters!

I am now willing to admit to the world that I enjoy fried oysters!

Profiteroles at Quartino

Eva and I along with a bunch of friends recently tried Quartino, a new Italian "tapas" concept restaurant owned by the Gibsons/Hugo Frog Bar folks. Dishes are mostly <$10 and meant to be shared. For six people, we ordered around 15-16 dishes including anti-pasta, a pizza, mussels, gnocchi, risotto, and three desserts. They serve wine by the glass and bottle but also in "quartino" size. The place was packed and noisy. Service was so so but it is a fun place and hopefully will improve over time to the Gibson level.

When are we going?

Alice's Vegetarian Cafe

Okay, even my leftovers were good. It may not have been the hippest or chillest place out there for a Friday night, but we still had to wait to get seated together. I liked the decor, it felt unpretentious and homey. I liked that Manish and Neha were able to look at 100% of the menu. I absolutely, positively loved that green tea shake. Where are we going next?

Back

Well, I'm $20 up upon return from Vegas, but let me tell you. I never want to go back to that city again. I am so tired. It's always the same ol', same ol'. Drinking, gambling, 24/7 energy. I must be getting old. These days, I need hot tea and a good book to be happy. Also, I'm feeling icky post-trip. A bit nauseous and headachey. Could possibly be sympathetic Neha pains, or could be all the stress of the past few weeks catching up.

But after determining that there is ZERO secondary market for Lucky Cat, I struck upon a revelation. Lucky Cat is not just a Chinese symbol of wealth and prosperity (though he does not come equipped with the required 2 AA batteries), he is also a world traveler and a kitty du classe. Stay tuned to my new flickr experiment (thanks B&E!)...

In either Loop, $50 is $50
Posted on January 4, 2006 by Michael Austin
Anyone who dines at the South Loop’s Opera Sunday through Wednesday in January receives a $50 gift certificate to Red Light, chef Jackie Shen’s pan-Asian dining destination in the West Loop. The voucher can be used any day until the end of April.
The offer goes both ways; dine at Red Light Sunday through Wednesday in January, and get $50 off at Opera, chef Paul Wildermuth’s contemporary Chinese restaurant, through April. And here’s the even better part; it’s $50 for each person at the table, and there’s no minimum purchase. You can’t afford not to eat at these places.
Red Light is at 820 W. Randolph St. (312-733-8880). Opera is at 1301 S. Wabash Ave. (312-461-0161).

Jellyfish So Beautiful

One of the things Eva and I did while in California was visit the Monterey Aquarium. I *love* aquariums and sealife and have visited many all over the place. The Monterey one is my favorite. One of the "newer" additions is an entire section of jellyfish. Simply amazing and beautiful.
